University of the West of Scotland

A beautiful, engaging new website to raise University of the West of Scotland’s international profile.

Background & objectives

The University of the West of Scotland (UWS) is ranked as one of the top 3% of universities in the world. In 2017 they approached Screenmedia with the task of reconceiving their website that no longer catered to their needs, due to a limiting CMS system.

With a vast amount of content and ambitious digital plans, UWS needed a modern website that could stand out to prospective students in a competitive market, carry international appeal, and raise UWS’ profile within the research community.

Thoroughly modern design

UWS wanted their new website to be more visual and usable than its predecessor, and to place the students and their stories front and centre. Our designs gave the site a thoroughly modern treatment, interpreting UWS’ brand guidelines into bold, colourful layouts, fresh typography, and immersive photography.


Powered by Umbraco 7

We chose the open source Umbraco 7 CMS to underpin UWS’ new site. Umbraco offers flexibility, creativity, and scalability out-the-box and freed UWS from the constraints of their previous, bespoke CMS.

Active Directory database integration

We integrated an API from UWS’s staff directory, making content population of staff information easy with single upload, multiple output. We also created a custom index page with enhanced filtering to add functionality to their existing database.

Header types

We created multiple header banners to give UWS flexibility in their content and signposting, elevating key pages with interactive media and allowing for dynamic variation in their regular annual campaigns.

Mega navigation

We developed a customisable and technically complex, yet beautifully simple mega navigation to ensure a clear and intuitive user experience through UWS' huge range of content.


UWS’s website launched at the start of the 2017/18 academic year and has been received with immense enthusiasm by both staff and students. The new site is captivating from the first impression and clearly differentiates UWS in a competitive field.

The new site is a foundation for the university’s future growth, and stands to move it forward as a truly modern institution.
