SDS Modern Apprenticeships

A beautifully designed responsive website, helping to bring Scotland’s young people into the workforce

The challenge

Attract a young audience to apply for apprenticeships, particularly female applicants to male-dominated sectors.

The outcome

Evolving past its initial campaign goal, the site has become the single digital hub for modern apprenticeships across Scotland, creating a crucial resource for Scotland’s youth.

A site fit for the future

Strategically, our team understood that it wasn’t enough to just deliver a beautiful looking website. The content, interaction, and navigation design had to be open, inviting and engaging to attract the younger target users, especially for female users who had been historically intimidated or put off from applying for roles in the male-dominated ICT or STEM sectors.

Putting apprentices front and centre

To create a real sense of opportunity, we integrated a series of video case studies with a diverse group of apprentices to provide the desired appeal, reassurance, and inspiration to push users towards applying for the programme themselves.

To meet user’s needs and SDS’s business objectives, we augmented the Umbraco CMS with a set of bespoke features and integrations.

We chose the flexible, scalable and robust CMS, Umbraco 7, which provides content editors and publishers full autonomy over their website content management.

Since its launch the site has grown from strength to strength, and has fulfilled its ambition to become the single digital hub for modern apprenticeships across Scotland.

Additional development phases since its launch have added an employer’s vacancy management dashboard, bespoke search features, and internal reporting functionality to the site, with more enhanced features already in the development pipeline.

The site’s modern design, clear navigation and functionality have been very well received by Skills Development Scotland and their users, and we’re looking forward to further developing this crucial resource for Scotland’s young people.
