A global multi-site solution to support family planning service provision worldwide.
Marie Stopes International (MSI) provide safe contraception and family planning services to thousands of women in 37 countries around the world. In 2016 they approached Screenmedia to redevelop the organisation's international corporate website, aimed at its major donors and influencers. Shortly after the project kick-off, MSI commissioned us for a second project to deliver a multi-website solution to engage clients globally.
MSI wanted to allow each of their national operations to set up and manage their own client facing websites, fully customisable to their local needs, but all managed from a single core platform. The primary goal of each site was to provide users with the opportunity to learn about the local MSI team, the services they offered, and how to get in touch with local clinic and service provider teams.
Knowing our solution would have to accommodate a broad range of cultures, technologies, and client services, we undertook a series of workshops with MSI to help map out core user journeys that would be common for all country websites. These workshops consisted of extensive auditing of current country site offerings, followed by an analysis of peers and competitors to create a guideline for exemplary content that could then be tailored and tweaked for each site’s needs.
To allow MSI to roll out updates and improvements across all country sites simultaneously, we planned a robust and extendable framework to accommodate multiple sites within the same Umbraco install. This allows each individual site to benefit from new features and functionalities in future updates, delivering great cost and time efficiency to MSI.
A unique challenge was finding a solution which complemented the corporate site yet resonated with a different core audience. With such an international audience the site needed to have exemplary UX design to be easily understood by people from a wide range of cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
A key challenge was developing a rich website experience that also considered users with limited access to the internet, as well as providing confidentiality to all users due to the sensitive nature of some of MSI’s content. All features and functionality were tested extensively on limited data connections, ensuring anonymous and secure access for users in challenging environments and media scaling appropriate to their access method. Thanks to this, the sites are capable of delivering a slick, modern design and experience smoothly over 2G and 3G internet connections.
Housing dozens of individual sites, each with their own requirements and languages, required extensive, bespoke modifications to MSI’s CMS, Umbraco 7. Some of our custom augmentations include;
Interactive Google maps customised to match the MSI brand
Multilingual capabilities through Vorto integration
Secure CMS-editable forms, customisable to suit each individual country’s needs
Zendesk live chat designed to fit within the MSI brand
To help MSI roll out their new solution around the world, we developed in-depth documentation for planning sites, including content guidance and CMS training. We project managed the strategic implementation of each site, organising MSI’s local operations into project teams, assigning key positions within each team and supporting them with adhoc training and project roadmaps.
Our support and management not only allows national organisations to implement a local site with great ease and an immense cost saving, but allows MSI to develop a single, consistent brand identity and technology platform across dozens of countries.
We are currently working with over 15 national MSI organisations across seven languages, with several countries having already launched their site. Our relationship with MSI has continued to grow, with new design, development, and strategic digital transformation projects helping to maximise the impact that the organisation has in supporting women and families across the globe.
