We collaborated with Matthew Algie to disrupt the coffee vending sector with great taste and excellent user experience.
We undertook extensive research to understand the variety of experiences available in the coffee vending market, including research into screen sizes, orientations, and processes used.
Low fidelity sketch-based prototypes were used to explore the order and sequence of the user flow, and to simulate the click-through sequence and ordering complexity. These evolved into high fidelity wireframes depicting each required screen and its associated content.
Moodboards allowed us to consider options for design treatment and explore photo visual, 3D visual, illustration, and iconography as potential approaches we could use to display the coffee menu and customisation options.
The discovery and ideation phase lead us to a mix of photo visual product treatments and vector illustration menu items, building an aesthetically pleasing yet functional design.
Colour backgrounds and a 'flat lay' style of photography were chosen to give the interface a contemporary look and feel. Shooting elements in isolation also increased the options for customisation, so that Matthew Algie can offer their customers bespoke machine branding.
A minimalist, pastel colour palette was chosen to complement the earthy tones of the product photography. Matched with a hand-rendered typographic style, these combine to create a contemporary artisanal feel to the user interface.
A series of animation sequences were completed to illustrate the machine’s internal work flow and the drink being prepared. These were precisely timed to coincide with the pour sequences of the machine, its noises, and physical output.
Combined with the machine designed by Filament PD, our solution delivers an entertaining and informative experience in ordering quality coffee. Matthew Algie is now undergoing trials with clients and the company has secured several partners.
Having commissioned Screenmedia on other projects in the past, we chose to return to them for our Halo coffee vending machine. They were prepared to take a proactive approach to the Halo project that combined our coffee expertise with their experience in UX, contemporary graphic design, and animation. Screenmedia had an intuitive understanding of what we were looking for and worked effectively and professionally as part of a team of local and national project development partners.
