IDL: Screenmedia catches up with our fourth intern Eddie

In September 2019 we welcomed new intern Eddie to the Screenmedia studios. As part of the TRC Inspiring Digital Leaders programme, Eddie was the fourth of five graduates looking to carve out a career in the digital industry.

The IDL internship offers interns an inside look at some of Scotland’s top creative agencies, covering everything from UX Design to Client Services. At Screenmedia, the interns have been sharpening their Web Development skills.

Eddie came from a design background, having completed his undergraduate degree in product design at Glasgow School of Art. Keen to dive straight into the digital world, he began attending talks and seminars where he was pointed in the direction of the IDL programme.

In his time in our studio, Eddie upskilled in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to help him in building a personal portfolio website from scratch. From creating the framework and styling the site, to squeezing in some animation and motion design, Eddie was able to put his learnings to the test in creating a digital CV. On his final day with us, we sat down with him to find out all about his time in the studio.

What’s been the best part of your experience at Screenmedia?

I’ve really enjoyed the studio culture; it’s very friendly, but everyone is hardworking. It gave me the chance to really get locked onto my work and learn to code quickly. It feels productive, and always having hot coffee available is a huge perk! The best part was definitely the atmosphere around the studio.

Was there anything that surprised you?

I’ve been surprised by how quickly the field of web development changes – it seems like everyone, even my mentors here, are constantly learning the latest technologies and newest trends. You really have to fight to stay ahead of the curve!

What’s something you learned while you were at Screenmedia?

Learning how to code has been a huge achievement for me. It felt a bit like a dark art and I thought it was going to be really difficult. However, it’s quite reassuring how quickly it can be learned with the right attitude and mentors.

How do you think this experience will help you in your career?

The IDL5 programme really gave me an insight into every discipline in a digital agency. I’ve been given a broad scope of knowledge in all areas, and I feel that now I have enough of an understanding to help decide what I’d like to focus on in my career.

What are you looking forward to about the other agencies?

I’ve only got one left, and it’s digital marketing. I don’t know much about it yet, but I’m really interested to see how UX design, web development and marketing all come together and finish the IDL programme on a high.

We had a fantastic time having Eddie in our studio and we wish him all the best for his last month in the IDL programme and beyond. If you’re a bright young graduate like Eddie, we’d love to hear from you! Check out our graduate roles and see where you could fit in.
