Recruiting for the Future at Screenmedia

Lauren | 03/10/2017

2017 has seen us recruiting from a more expansive and varied pool of specialist talent to keep up with constantly evolving trends.

The digital landscape is always evolving, but over the past few years we've seen a big transition away from individual platforms to connected ecosystems and the beginning of a transition to an AI-first world.

As a practice we always strive to keep ourselves at the leading edge of our industry, and 2017 has seen us recruiting from a more expansive and varied pool of specialist talent to keep up with constantly evolving trends.

Our First PhD Candidate

Given the open nature of connected ecosystems, it's vital that platforms are built to the highest, most robust standards. Consumers rely on ecosystems such as the smart home to work every time; failure of one individual component damages their trust in their entire ecosystem, so it’s imperative that we work to the highest standards for our clients (such as Honeywell).

To meet this demand we've taken our commitment to quality one step further with the hiring of our first PhD candidate, Jamie. Currently awaiting the outcome of his thesis around Design Quality, Jamie is working with our Integrations and Voice Development teams. Motivated to pursue a PhD by his curiosity in improving software, Jamie’s thesis examines how to close the loop between practice and guidance in the design and development of software products.

Jamie’s work highlighted the importance of working with talented people and developing a community of practice - 80% of knowledge, guidance, and support comes from those around you, rather than tools or guidance. We’ve earned a reputation as an organisation which not only attracts but nurtures top talent in our industry; but by looking critically and academically at how knowledge is transferred within an organisation, we’re seeking to enhance the standards which our clients have come to expect from us.

An MSc in Data Science

One of the biggest challenges our clients face is the increasing opportunities and importance of AI technologies. The proliferation of the Internet of Things and cloud computing has driven a huge increase in the volumes of data, and AI presents the opportunity to make smarter use of this data. We’ve been working with voice technologies for over a year now, but in 2017 we hired our first data science graduate Vlad to bolster our exploration and adoption of AI solutions for our clients.

With a Masters covering topics including machine learning, big data, information retrieval, and AI; Vlad's previous projects include developing machine learning models to improve software testing, analysing large amounts of geolocation data, and improving mobile-human interaction. He is now working with our Integrations and Voice teams to build and deploy systems that utilise natural language understanding and other cognitive services.

Fostering Entrepreneurial Thinking with Young Entrepreneurs

The rapid growth and impact of startups on the technology landscape has mainstreamed new ways of approaching problems and innovating solutions. Even major global conglomerates and government departments are now exploring new business models and developing more flexible ways of working.

We’ve long been practitioners of design thinking and are increasingly coaching our bluechip clients on how they can integrate this methodology into their organisations, but we’ve also benefited from a growing pool of talent with entrepreneurial experience. In 2017 we hired a record number of people who have run their own businesses. While some have run businesses as part of university programmes, our graduate mobile developers Julio and Daniil both created successful independent businesses.

Entrepreneurial thinking and an awareness of the commercial demands of our clients are key not only to successful project deliveries, but also for fostering an environment which encourages innovative thinking. Being able to understand and respond to emerging trends for our clients in their respective industries has served us well, and to ensure we stay ahead of the curve.

2017 has seen some big changes to the technology industry, and as we approach 2018 we anticipate yet more disruption to come to the way we live, work, and play. But we’ve never been ones to shrink from a challenge, and as our practice continues to grow we will continue to draw in from an increasingly broad range of technologists, strategists, and designers.
