Digitising paper-based travel diaries into a responsive multi-platform web application

The client

Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) is the largest of Scotland’s seven regional transport partnerships. They play a vital role in coordinating efforts among local authorities and other key stakeholders to enhance regional transport services and better serve the needs of people and businesses across the west of Scotland.

The challenge

Digitise SPT’s paper-based travel survey diaries to improve data capture and allow for faster processing, enabling SPT to gain a better understanding of their commuters.

The solution

An intuitive web app that provides accurate and timely insights into the needs of SPT's audience, while reducing administration costs.

Helping businesses become digital-first

Designed to be intuitive for both new and returning users, our solution builds upon the original paper-based survey while adhering to best practices in digital form design and data capture.

Convenient and intuitive

We created a mobile-first solution that can be easily and accurately filled out while on the move, incorporating key integrations to minimise user input.

Technology

Drawing on our expertise in Umbraco development and integrations, we delivered a fast, scalable solution that works seamlessly across web and mobile platforms.

Umbraco

Our solution was developed using the open-source Umbraco content management system, enabling SPT to customise content and questions for each survey phase.

Amazon Web Services (AWS)

Hosting the application on AWS ensures its ability to handle increased traffic and deliver a fast and reliable experience for survey participants.

PCA Predict

Integration with the data validation service PCA Predict enhances data quality and reduces error rates, resulting in less administrative work and more accurate insights for SPT staff.

Google

Integration with Google Maps allows participants to input their journey's start and end points in real-time as they travel.

Results

The new digital travel diary was launched in time for SPT's April 2018 survey phase and received positive feedback from participants. By digitising a crucial part of their data capture process, SPT not only simplifies the process for customers to contribute and provide feedback on their services but also achieves significant benefits such as cost reduction in administration and faster data processing. This leads to a better, more accurate, and timely understanding of their audience's needs.

As regular users of SPT services, we are thrilled to be part of the organisation's journey towards becoming a digital-first enterprise, and we look forward to continuing our partnership with them.
