An innovative home automation app featuring a cross-platform solution for smartphone and Pebble watch.
For many years heating systems were nothing more than wall mounted thermostats. By 2010, with the increasing ubiquity of mobile smartphones and portable touch screen devices, our client realised that they needed a partner for the design and development of their new generation of smart mobile touch-control interfaces.
In 2011 Screenmedia were chosen as the core digital product design partner for their flagship EvoTouch Colour.
As we worked together on the new home thermostat, our client was already developing their product roadmap towards delivering smart heating systems via web and mobile applications.
Following the success of the EvoTouch project, Screenmedia were asked to design and develop an integrated digital approach to smart thermostats.
Having developed a number of successful mobile applications, we knew the challenges that delivering apps across multiple devices could bring. When we were approached to deliver a flagship smart-zoning control app, we knew that to meet the challenge we'd need to take a big step forward. This included making the foresightful decision to use Xamarin; a new, industry leading cross-platform development environment allowing us to develop without compromising on delivering a high quality user interface.
Alongside the technical challenges of such a project, we also set ourselves the lofty goal of delivering a 5* app, which excited and surprised our users with a simple yet powerful user interface. To meet these challenges, we needed to start from a strong foundation and began by completing a series of analysis activities including reviewing the current marketplace, developing user personas and working with project stakeholders and end users to develop an industry leading list of features.
By delivering the development of the app using an Agile project methodology we were able to get started almost immediately and our client felt empowered to amend and change priorities over the course of the project as internal work streams of the project evolved.
We knew from the outset that in order to deliver an industry leading app we needed to deliver an unparalleled user experience. By putting our users at the core of our analysis and design activities through the creation of User Personas and User Stories, we ensured that each and every requirement had a clear benefit to the user. To get a more visual perspective we developed a series of interactive wireframe prototypes to demonstrate user flows and screen layouts. By presenting the User Interface and User Journeys in this way we were able to gain valuable feedback from users, allowing us to understand their behaviours, needs, and goals.
By combining our user experience expertise, knowledge of industry best practice and a unrelenting desire to include users in everything we do we were able to develop an overall user experience that provided a clear and concise route for users to manage their home heating needs.
Using the powerful Xamarin mobile development suite, we were able to cut the cost of developing a cross-platform solution without compromising on delivering a high quality user interface and user experience. Xamarin provides the perfect solution to mobile development by allowing the delivery of separate native mobile apps with a shared codebase, minimising development and support time, and increasing quality.
The goal of developing a simple yet powerful solution was to keep the perfect experience for busy homeowners who value comfort and efficiency at the heart of this project. Placing the home at the centre of the app's interaction, we worked closely with end users to deliver an engaging, intuitive application allowing users to control multiple locations, set the indoor heating temperature, and initiate a range of Quick Actions.

Supported by a powerful Umbraco CMS, the TCC web portal provides customers with a simple and powerful way to conveniently manage their account by updating their information, adding new locations or sharing existing locations with their friends and family.
Following the success of the mobile app we moved our attention from the fingers to your wrist by developing a Pebble Watchapp and Watchface. Designed to complement the Smartphone app, the Pebble app provides users with a range of heating control features including giving them a real-time view of their home heating system at a glance.
The TCC website was delivered using fully responsive design we ensured a modern, engaging experience, and that we provided users with the best experience possible regardless of their device.
