Overview
The National Library of Scotland is an information treasure
trove of Scotland's knowledge, history and culture, with millions
of books, manuscripts and maps covering every subject.
In this new website for NLS we help teachers & pupils to
discover the history of the women's suffrage movement in Scotland.
Besides learning content, the site is packed with online activities
and downloads. Naturally, the site extensively uses material from
the National Library of Scotland.
Our main objectives were to create a web style that was
contemporary to the subject but based on modern web standards and
styles. We implemented the design on our Umbraco based Content
Management System, enabling the team to grow and maintain the site
in-house.
Perhaps the biggest challenge was configuring the site (and the
CMS) to include image zoom and download functionality: no mean
feat! So, beyond an interest in the subject, you should at least
check the site out for the zoom feature: for something so tricky to
produce (cross browser/platform and accessible i.e. no-flash) it's
a very good piece of functionality courtesy of the hard work of our
development team.
