Forestry Commission: Red Squirrel of the Highlands

Overview

Red Squirrels of the Highlands is a Forestry Commission Scotland project that aims to help protect our nationally endangered Red Squirrel population. By tracking the whereabouts of Red Squirrels the project will help Forestry make effective plans for protecting their future and keeping the highlands free of grey squirrels.

The website is the perfect solution to enable volunteer surveyors, and members of the public, to capture and record sightings to the website (database) and plot them on an Ordnance survey map. The map is building over time to plot every recorded sighting (since 2007) in even the remotest areas of the Highlands.

User generated content is at the heart of the design, with the site enabling users to comment on the weekly blog, written by the red squirrel conservation officers, use the forum to discuss all squirrelly issues, chat, explore, read, comment and generally get excited about red squirrels. The gallery also publishes the best of the squirrel pics submitted via the sightings database.

The team at Screenmedia have really enjoyed working on this particular project. So much so, that we've bought our own Red and Grey Squirrel costumes - watch this space!
