National Library of Scotland:  iPod Touch/iPhone App

Overview

We were delighted to win a competitive tender to work with National Library of Scotland to produce our very first client mobile application; The John Murray Archive Interactive Tour, available for the iPod Touch and iPhone 3G/3GS.

This interactive tour is bursting with engaging content themed around the John Murray Publishing dynasty which eventually spanned seven generations, and over four centuries publishing authors such as Jane Austen, Charles Darwin, Lord Byron and Walter Scott.

The tour takes users on a journey through the key themes of the Archive: Literature, Publishing, Science, Travel and Exploration, Politics and Society and finishes with a closer look at the Murray's themselves, and the individual influences they had over the genres and works they published and promoted.

Following emerging standards in smartphone navigation, the tour presents content via an easy to use, colour themed menu ensuring the highest standards of usability and accessibility. Within each section, users can watch a short audio visual presentation narrated by Kirsty Wark and explore documents of significance complete with audio narrative descriptions. They can also delve deeper into digitalised letters, manuscripts, and business records from the archive which tell the story of this great period of revolutionary works.

The application is available for hire in the National Library of Scotland and is also available for download from the iTunes app store.
