Forestry Commission: Red Squirrel of the Highlands

Enabling volunteer surveyors and the public to capture and record sightings of Scotland's endangered red squirrel.

Red Squirrels of the Highlands

This Forestry Commission Scotland project aimed to help protect the endangered red squirrel population through tracking and observation. Screenmedia's website enabled volunteer surveyors and members of the public to capture and record sightings of red squirrels and plot them on an Ordnance Survey map. The map is being built up over time to plot every recorded sighting (since 2007), even in the remotest areas of the Highlands.

With such an engaging subject matter, we were sure to build and design the Red Squirrels of the Highlands website with user-generated content at its heart. The site enables users to comment on the weekly blog written by the red squirrel conservation officers, use the forum to discuss squirrely issues, chat, explore, read, comment, and generally get excited about red squirrels. The gallery also publishes the best of the squirrel photos submitted via the sightings database.
