The Big Plus project is all about developing adult literacy and
numeracy skills. A hard to reach group includes young men with few
formal qualifications from school. Screenmedia were commissioned to
produce a learning resource that would be engaging and fun for
young men needing to develop their literacy and numeracy
skills.
Our response to the brief was to develop a series of games,
using football themes and subjects. The games included keepy uppy, penalty shoot-out, top trumps,
top of the leagues, match commentary, home & away and match
report.
The games are fun and engaging and so proved to be highly
effective in building reading, writing and number skills within
this target group. The resource also helped to significantly
improve the confidence of learners who lacked formal
qualifications.
The design employs character animation and voiceover to improve
accessibility and to guide, encourage and reward users.
As a multi-platform solution we first authored the resource in
Adobe Flash for CD-ROM then repurposed the games for playing
online.
The games are making a very positive impact on learners and
Screenmedia are now extending the concept to new themes for modern
apprenticeship skills.
