Overview
Elament provides information for people seeking assistance with
mental health problems. The service, set up by North Lanarkshire
Council, includes a number of online tools and resources to help
people get the help they need. But, over half their audience
doesn't have home access to a PC, so we helped them offer their
services in new ways.
A recent Gartner study predicts that by 2015, more people will
be accessing the web via mobile browsers than desktop browsers.
This alone shows how important is it to ensure that websites are
optimized for handheld devices. Take Elament's audience, more than
50% of their service users don't have access to a PC or broadband
at home; however, the majority owns a smartphone. Optimizing their
website for the smaller screen (mobile phones and tablets) was a
top priority.
We know from experience that most desktop websites need
customising if users are to get the best experience. Most sites are
hard to navigate on the small screen because the resolutions are
entirely different but not only that, the context is different too
because most users are not sitting at a desk.
We worked with elament to understand how they engage their
audience. We used this information to inform the web and the mobile
user experience. By successfully extending their website and
content management system (CMS) to both desktop web and mobile web
has significantly improved access to an essential online
service.
