BBC Brainsmart

Engaging teenagers with useful memory techniques through quirky animations and a bespoke microsite.

BBC Brainsmart

BBC Brainsmart, a resource driven by the Learning Team at the BBC, delivers useful memory techniques to teenagers. Our brief for this project was to produce a series of fun animations with a supporting microsite that helped visitors memorise information, manage stress, and mentally prepare for big events. Each element of the project had to be informative and useful to the target audience, but also quirky and engaging.

In our approach we developed a simple, clean, hand-drawn scene and character style. Working with the BBC, we developed scripts & storyboards to impactfully deliver the resource’s memory techniques.

Then it was onto the character and scene assets. At this stage of the project we developed the character of ‘George’, who ultimately came to be the face of our Brainsmart animations.

His everyday trials and tribulations created the narrative structure for the resource’s content. Finally, we produced the animations (using Adobe Flash) that brought to life stories of George as he overcame various struggles by using different memory techniques.

To make the content even more engaging, we brought in Radio Scotland’s DJ Vic Galloway to provide voiceover. This, along with additional layers of sound effects, complimented the quirky animation style and rounded George’s personality.

In the design and development of the Brainsmart microsite, we carried through the hand-drawn style of the animations to influence the UI design, style, look and feel. The microsite was easy to navigate, true to the essence of the animation, and highly engaging to the target audience.
