Whoever said developers aren't artistic hasn't met the
Code Pharaoh.
In a typical digital agency there are creative types, tech types
and a bunch of people in the middle. Creative people write, design,
illustrate, and have great ideas. They're often considered to be
the right brain folk. The studio balance is then logically restored
by the left brains, the more technical, rational and structured
types, you know the developers and programmers. But they're not so
easily pigeon holed you know!!
Take Lachlann, he's our self proclaimed Code Pharaoh and he's
not just a left brainer. Yes, he's part web developer but he's also
part musician and part artist too. In fact, his penchant for absurd
art (I'll tell you about his musical career some other time) was
recently the focus of a rather striking and memorable art
exhibition.

Lachlann was the first artist to exhibit at the brand new
Super Club; an old Edinburgh Tyre factory that has been lovingly
turned into a studio and exhibition space.

The exhibition, entitled Stealth Cowboy was named after a
song by the "Legendary Stardust Cowboy - a rock and roll musician
with a really weird outsider sound".
How does a developer with a science degree get involved
in art?
I got curious so I asked Lachlann and here's what he had to
say:
"I started making art when I studied computing science at Uni,
it was a good past time to unwind from thinking about algorithms
and logarithmic complexity."
"After I graduated I started making more and more works and that
eventually led to people asking me to exhibit and contribute to
various publications."
How do you create these images?
"I like to take found images from the internet and edit them
using Photoshop to create weird pop art prints and animations."
"I also make lots of 'zines and booklets of my work, this
exhibition is a bit of a retrospective of work I have created over
the last few years."

"My artwork is absurd; I think that is the only way to
describe it."
Lachlann has exhibited a few times over the last few years
including a solo show in Glasgow and group shows in Edinburgh, New
York and Savona. His animations were also
short listed for two awards in last year's Fest Anca animation
festival in Slovakia.
What's next on the art agenda for
Lachlann?
"I have just completed some works for 'Atypica Mag' in Argentina
and I'm currently working on some pieces for a 'zine being
published in Austria. I also have some new animations in the
pipeline which promise to be very silly."
I'm looking forward to it Lachlann!
And so it goes to show, you never can judge a book by its cover
and you should never accuse a developer of only using their left
brain.

Super Club have some interesting stuff in the pipeline too.
Their next
event is called 'Take me to your dealer' with artworks by Rick
and Jamie McNeill. The Super Club Studio blog
also comes highly recommended.
